Theodora, Empress of Byzantium in the 6th century CE, must surely rank as one of the most influential and powerful women in history. A low-born prostitute/actress turned imperial mistress turned empress, she was intelligent, determined, devout, imperious... and accused by her enemies of sexual deviancy. She had a hand in much of her husband Emperor Justinian’s legislation, corresponded independently with foreign rulers, and was an early advocate for women’s rights in Byzantium. So when I looked for a name for this necklace featuring a Byzantine Cross pendant, hers was definitely the first name on the list.
Like most of my work, these pieces are made of anodized aluminum: they are therefore very light and nickel-free, and will not rust, fade or tarnish. They are available in a wide variety of colours: black and gold has proven a popular choice for this piece, but I love trying out new colour combinations! Please use the comment field of the order form to indicate your choice of colours. If you leave the comment field blank, we will assume black and gold.
